How It All Started...

I'd been searching for a Malinois for quite some time. My old working pit bull is now a retired senior, spending his days holding the couch down. I wanted a new breed of dog to work. I have always admired the Belgian Malinois I've seen working at various protection dog trials. I wasn't particularly fond of the idea of raising a puppy and was considering an older mature adult. All my dogs have been rescued adults, and I've never had the opportunity to raise a puppy. So naturally I was skeptical about my abilities. I searched various rescues organizations, located breeders, looked in dog sport magazines, and called various friends. My husband was ready to purchase from a breeder we had found and at the last minute decided to make one more phone call. That call started it all. He was told 'I have just what you want, come and get it if you want.' When he finished the call he excitedly announced that he had found a 10 month old female Malinois that had the qualities I was looking for. All we needed to do was just drive two hours and pick her up. So I agreed; lets go see this dog. When we got there our friend came out and there was this little Malinois puppy following her. I thought to myself she is really cute, but show me the 10 month old. Well as it turned out there was no 10 month old female it was a 10 week old female! We played around with her, evaluated her potential, and spent some time with her. I was still stalling on my decision. Is this the right dog? Should I wait and see what other opportunities are out there? I quickly thought to myself... do I really want to be housebreaking a puppy, getting up early everyday before work to take her outside regardless of the weather, listening to all the noise, taking daily outings for socialization? I thought again to myself, NO WAY! That's crazy, I'll wait. But I guess my ability to say no out loud was completely overcome by those cute brown eyes and striking beauty. My judgment instantly became hazy, and the next thing I remember was holding a cute 10 week old puppy on my lap for the drive home! Well, that's how it started and we haven't looked back. We train every day, hit the shows when we can, and have lots of fun doing so. I'm hooked and love her dearly.
